REVIEW: YG - My Krazy Life

At BITM we try to keep most of our musical selection towards Hip-hop even though we encourage diversity, we attempt to stick toward the essence of the culture. This is not one of those times. YG just released his album My Krazy Life on iTunes and select stores. I was not going to even listen to this album because I don’t really like much of his music, but I kept hearing through twitter that his album was nice. For once, rumors were true. This album truly surprised me with it’s concept and track listing. Def Jam and CTE World should definitely be breaking bread off of this LP.

My Krazy Life is simply an audio autobiography. The plot is similar to Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.a.a.d. city. The first track is “bpt” in which YG vigorously boasts about what hood he comes from, and how he came up in Compton. “I Just Wanna Party” is a continuation of the first track with him letting us know his lessons from his family members about being in the hood but YG just wants to party though he will still fuck a nigga up. Almost every track has an insane amount of energy but this one takes the cake because of the features from TDE’s Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock.

“Meet the Flockers” featuring Tee Cee is a step by step way to rob a house in a neighborhood and who to go for. This track is comparable to Biggie’s “10 Crack Commandments” just a different subject. This and “Sorry Momma” are my top two songs on this album. "Sorry Momma" is YG spilling his feelings out apologetically to his mother for all the things that he has done to her in addition to the fact of her having seizures and only being able to see out of one eye. The emotion and remorse coming from this song is very touching especially if you put your mother through hard times.

“First, you find a house and scope it out
Find a Chinese neighborhood, cause they don’t believe in bank accounts…”

                                                                                                         -YG on “Meet The Flockers”

My Krazy Life is unbelievably and surprisingly a good album. There are small skits that piece it together to better visualize what YG came from, the robbing gang-banging street life in South Central Los Angeles. This album has a lot of features, which might be unappealing to some people but I believe that the features were perfect and made the project cohesive. This may not be for everybody seeing as how YG is no Kendrick Lamar or Murs, however if you’re jonesing for some good gangsta music, this is the route to go.
